Serial (Criminal Justice) PART 1 - HISTORICAL AND SUMMARY OF THE STATISTICAL PERSPECTIVE TO ARCTIC RESEARCH by JYS Kim Research and theory in criminal justice has been increasingly concentrated at the statistical and quantitative level in recent years. Increasing numbers of scholars and practitioners have worked with social scientists and quantitative researchers and scholars. Critical research questions related to criminal justice have been posed and received responses at the statistical level. For example, more and more professionals and scholars have become concerned about the relationship between crime and criminal justice, with various theories and findings proposed and received at the quantitative level. The fact that quantitative methods have become an integral part of criminal justice research has raised concerns about the quality and validity of statistics. While the concerns are valid, the fact remains that statistics are indispensable tools for researchers and practitioners. The last 20 years have witnessed a significant increase in the number of scholars writing at the qualitative level. The quantitative paradigm has rapidly developed in various areas of criminal justice research. Scholars in many disciplines have responded to the influence of statistics and quantitative methods in criminal justice research. Although the number of qualitative researchers has substantially increased in this area, there has been a continuing decline in the number of scholars who have used the quantitative paradigm. The continued use of quantitative methods at the expense of qualitative methods is problematic. One major concern with using quantitative methods is the lack of sampling, which not only is problematic for theory but also has other implications for the validity of quantitative estimates. The statistical program that is widely used in many disciplines, Stata, has greatly facilitated the use of quantitative methods in criminal justice research. This trend was inevitable since most practitioners are used to working with quantitative methods. However, it is likely that this trend will lead to a narrowing of scope and will eventually lead to declining research quality in the field. In recent years, the need to use qualitative methods has been growing. Qualitative methods provide a rich source of data to address many important issues in criminal justice. The number of scholars who use statistical analysis has not kept pace with the number of scholars writing at the qualitative level. This is evident in the fact that the majority of scholars who have published their research have tended to be quantitative researchers. This means that our scholarship will suffer unless we can make qualitative research a priority. Although the number of scholars using quantitative methods in criminal justice research has continued to grow, the proportion of time spent on quantitative research has remained relatively static.
